British Library Review: Second Stage

As part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport programme of reviews, it is currently undertaking a review of the British Library.

This consultation is closed

It is a requirement of good Government that the bodies it funds should be reviewed every five years. The review is looking at the British Library's role and functions, how those functions can best be carried out, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the way in which the Library delivers services to its users.

It will be comprehensive, wide-ranging and vigorous and is intended to:

  • examine how the Library has performed in the past;
  • consider what its aims and objectives should be for the next few years;
  • and review the efficiency and effectiveness of the way in which it delivers its services
  • and make recommendations for its future development and management.

The first stage of the review looked at the role and functions of the British Library, whether these functions are still necessary and how they contribute to the delivery of wider DCMS and Governmental objectives. A report on the first stage of the review was published on 7 March. This recommended that the Library should continue as a non-governmental public body (NDPB) and that the second stage of the review should consider how the Library might most effectively and efficiently be organised
