Good morning everyone; thank you Barry.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe for agreeing to step in as interim chair of English Heritage in such sad circumstances. Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart was a very committed servant of our cultural heritage and, in my experience, a fellow believer in the power of culture to change lives. It’s a great loss to not have Sandy’s guiding hand helping to steer a course for heritage.

Following the announcement the Secretary of State for Health and I made on 6 June 2008, I am today setting out further details of the Government’s free swimming scheme in partnership with local government.

I want to begin by saying that, in a difficult year, with difficult circumstances for the music industry – which I recognise – I believe that the PPL under Fran’s leadership, and with the excellent team he has, has really had an excellent year going through the £100m mark for the first time.
