uk city of culture

In 2009 applications were submitted to a competition to host the first UK City of Culture which will take place in 2013.

City of Culture 2013 aims to build on the success of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture 2008, which had significant social and economic benefits for the area.

The winning city will be one that is able to deliver a substantial programme of cultural activity which leads to a demonstrable step-change in their area, and a lasting legacy.

The deadline for initial bids was 11 December 2009. Expert assessors are looking at each bid received and an independent advisory panel will recommend a short list to be announced early in 2010. Shortlisted cities will then have until 28 May 2010 to submit their final bids.
