latest projects

We commission research that examines issues facing our sectors and ways we can address them.

The latest research projects commissioned by us are listed below.

The Culture and Sport Evidence Programme (CASE)

Set up by DCMS, the CASE programme works in collaboration with our sector-leading non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs):

This collaboration brings together £1.8M over three years from us and the NDPBs, making it the biggest mixed methods culture and sport research programme ever undertaken. It aims to build on the statistical data on culture and sports engagement generated at a national level by our 'Taking part' survey and at a local level by Sport England's Active People survey, by drawing in wider data and research.

The programme initially focused on culture and sport participation research questions:

  • what leads people into or away from engaging in culture and sports
  • what do communities and individuals get from culture and sport?

During the first stage of CASE we assessed relevant high-quality studies, data sources and analysis relating to culture and sports policy on engagement. At a launch event in July 2010 we released studies that look at who engages, when and why they engage, and work looking at the impact of that participation and the value of that impact. The findings from these studies can be found here.

We are now entering phase two and currently scoping projects to build on what we have learned from the work so far.

For further details of the CASE programme please see the Case website. If you have any further queries, please email AdamC.Cooper@culture.gsi.gov.uk.

Creative Industries Standard Industrial Classifications

A major project is underway to update our Creative Industries framework to take account of the latest Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC 2007). Many users produce statistics based on the DCMS framework, and so the update (from a 2003 SIC basis) is an important and necessary step forward.

The new SIC codes give us a chance to review the definition that we use to measure the Creative Industries, The broader definition of these industries used by DCMS (including areas that we cannot measure using the data available) currently remains unchanged from the 2001 Creative Industries Mapping Document.

The new definition used to measure the Creative Industries will be used in the next release of Economic Estimates, due out in November/December 2010. These estimates will provide a snapshot of these industries based mainly on 2008 data, with work on establishing a time series beginning in 2011.

2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Meta-Evaluation

DCMS has commissioned a comprehensive meta-evaluation of the impacts and legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The meta-evaluation aims to capture and synthesize the results of evaluations of individual legacy programmes, projects and initiatives, and to use these – along with additional research including secondary data analysis – to evaluate the overall legacy of the Games for London and the UK.

Outputs will be available on the DCMS website once they are produced.

Taking Part Analysis Programme

The 'Taking part' survey team have recently commissioned Knight, Kavanagh and Page to undertake a project to analyse 'Taking Part' data in greater depth. This project aims to develop a greater understanding of both adult and child participation, who does and doesn’t participate in culture and sport, and the benefits of participation. Findings from this work should be released in January 2011.
